Plan to Attend the East Region Networking Event in Atlanta

The ANIA East Region, in collaboration with the GA HIMSS Chapter sponsored Nursing Informatics Boot Camp, will host a networking event at Uncle Julio's Restaurant in Atlanta, GA, on June 7, 2014, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Please join ANIA leaders, Boot Camp attendees, ANIA members, and colleagues for complimentary drinks and some of Uncle Julio's fine Mexican food. Last year's Networking Event was a great success, having had over 40 attendees. We hope to see you there!

Western Region Director Pat Mulberger will be attending Meditech's Nurse and Home Care Forum, June 11-13, 2014, at the Boston Marriott Quincy. Pat will be welcoming ANIA members and colleagues during a breakfast on Friday, June 13. She will also be presenting on a multi-disciplinary discharge process and the transfer process. Uninsured Rate Lowest Since 2008, Survey Finds

The number of uninsured U.S. adults has decreased to 13.4% as of April, per a recent Gallup/Healthways survey. This figure has dropped from 15% in March, and was the lowest percentage since the monthly poll began in January 2008. (Source: Gallup, May 5, 2014)

Increased Demand for Nurses Expected Due to ACA, Baby Boomers

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is expected to result in a shortage of nurses, with more than 8 million people now enrolled for health coverage under the new legislation. An influx of aging baby boomers entering Medicare will also increase the demand for nurses, according to Peter McMenamin, ANA's senior policy fellow and health economist. With the looming retirement of half a million nurses, McMenamin notes that the pipeline itself is in danger, and has been for some time, with additional impending shortages of nurse educator roles. ACA Contributes to Decrease in Hospital Deaths, 30-Day Readmissions, HSS Reports

Recently released Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) data revealed a decrease in the amount of all-cause 30-day readmissions for Medicare patients in 2012, as well as 15,000 fewer hospital deaths and a $4.1 billion savings in health care costs. This can be partially attributed to Affordable Care Act (ACA) programs, which offer hospitals incentives for quality care and penalize them for high readmission rates.
